“More is up” for domain restriction in ASL

چکیده
This paper investigates a form-meaning mapping in American Sign Language (ASL) whereby pronouns, verbs, and quantifiers can be produced progressively higher signing space to signal widening of their contextually supplied domains. We show that this is not gesture-like expression surprise, uncertainty, or quantity, also equivalent well-studied domain-widened spoken language, but rather involves reference via plural pronouns ASL. When appearing with verbs these are incorporated as arguments when partitive-like domain restriction. In addition, we the use continuous along height dimension ASL allows for gradient interpretations narrowing. contrast grammatical functions sign languages superficially similar gesture prosody accompanying language. Which stage of mouse embryos is more appropriate for vitrification?
Objective Vitrification has been shown as one of the most effective methods of cryopreservation for mammalian embryos. However, there is no consensus which stage of embryonic development is the most appropriate for vitrification with subsequent maximal development after thawing. This study was carried out to explore and compare the effect(s) of vitrification on mouse 2-cell, 4-cell, 8-cell, mor...
متن کاملDomain Restriction in Quanti cation is Independent of
The interaction between intonational marking (focus) and domain restriction in adverbial quantiication has been a matter of debate for a number of years. Most theories assume some semantic representation of focus that innuences the interpretation of quantiiers. Views on this interdependence range from a direct mapping of descriptive content between the two representations to a more indirect int...
متن کاملOn Quantifier Domain Restriction
In this paper, we provide a comprehensive survey of the space of possible analyses of the phenomenon of quantifier domain restriction, together with a set of considerations which militate against all but our own proposal. Among the many accounts we consider and reject are the ‘explicit’ approach to quantifier domain restriction discussed, for example, by Stephen Neale, and the pragmatic approac...
متن کاملVagueness and Domain Restriction∗
This paper develops an idea of saving ordinary uses of vague predicates from the Sorites by means of domain restriction. A tolerance level for a predicate, along a dimension, is a difference with respect to which the predicate is semantically insensitive. A central gap for the predicate+dimension in a domain is a segment of an associated scale, larger than this difference, where no object in th...
